“I grew up in the building business. My father had a door-and-sash building supply company, in Southern California. When I was a kid, he'd often take me along to walk job sites and show me where - and how - things were to be built. Framed construction sites looked like a maze of skeletal wooden structures to me, but he would show me where the rooms were laid out and the flow of each living space. My father also taught me how to read a set of building plans; and I soon began to understand the steps necessary in construction. He would spread out the plans and stand at the other side of them and describe the layout to me. This also meant that he could read upside down and nothing escaped his attentive eyes, especially when he would make sure I was doing my schoolwork.....
I learned a great deal from my father and will always be grateful for his tutelage. Now, I get to apply his lessons to all my projects."
