Inside Secrets of Hidden Hardware

“I like to create pieces that leave people wondering, 'How was that done?'. With every project I design, I like to also figure out how to build it. It seems like engineering and practicality are often left out of so many great designs and the builder is left trying to figure out how to construct them. On the Eucalyptus Ave. deck project, I didn't want any hardware visible on the curved fascia. The only way to solve this was to fasten it from behind. I created an adjustable plate that would pull the redwood and leave no visible traces up front.
On the Lakeville Highway house, I also designed hardware for the custom pickets, so they could be sandwiched and appear to be floating between the stone columns. This required having sturdy (yet thin) metal straps and fastening hardware fabricated to hide the effect. Since I customize everything I design and build, it's always fun and challenging to create custom hardware as well.”
